Trent University Business student Brooke Hammer has been named a finalist for the 2016 Bears' Lair Entrepreneurial Competition. She is one of six remaining competitors now vying for $120 000 in prizes.
Brooke’s venture is “Chimp Treats,” a line of sweet treats made entirely from fruit. Chimp Treats signature product is “NICEcream,” an ice cream product made entirely from bananas.
“As a varsity athlete and busy student, I rely on the power of fruits and veggies to get me through my toughest races, longest workouts and hardest exams,” she notes. “But who wants to give up ice cream and cookies?”
“Valuing simplicity and ethical ingredient-sourcing, I produced products that were free from allergens and chemicals and did not support animal cruelty, human exploitation, or environmental destruction.”
The Bears’ Lair Entrepreneurial Competition is in the style of CBC’s The Dragons’ Den. The competition was created to encourage entrepreneurship and small business development in the greater Peterborough area. Entrepreneurs are eligible to enter the competition.
This isn’t Brooke’s first venture. She previously launched “Take Flight,” a successful mission to assist youth with special needs as they transition from high school to adulthood.
She will be also be an exhibitor at the Ontario Centres of Excellence Discovery Showcase this May.
According to Brooke, none of this would have been possible without the assistance of FastStart – the youth entrepreneurship training partnership put on by Trent University, Fleming College and The Greater Peterborough Innovation Cluster.
“There are big things in our future and none of it would have been possible without my wonderful mentors at Trent University or the never-ending support, encouragement, and guidance of Rose from FastStart Peterborough.”
“Having people who believe in you, provide honest feedback/advice, and are willing to share their wealth of knowledge truly make all the difference, and that’s exactly what the Peterborough start-up community is all about.”
Bears' Lair competition finals will take place on April 26 at 7 p.m. at The Venue in Peterborough.
