Trent Excalibur rower Alex Watson '12 and his coach, former Olympian Carol Love share the unique bond that happens between coach and athlete. This connection was recently profiled as part of the CBC Sports series The Bond, showcasing Mr. Watson’s pursuit of his Olympic dream at the Row to Podium Talent Development Centre at Trent University. Watch their inspirational story on CBC.ca.
Watson's rowing career is inextricably linked to his coach:
"Carol Love put me in the single. After failing to flip right out of the gates, Carol insisted that I start taking the rate up as high as I could. I think I got up to 24 strokes per minute before I caught a crab and was in the water. After the initial shock, I was back in the boat. I immediately knew the sport was for me."
Currently working on a Masters degree in Sustainability Studies, Watson was selected for the Tomorrow's Team Canada funding program as a prospective future Olympian. He was one of 52 athletes in 39 summer and winter sports to receive a Fuelling Athletes and Coaching Excellence (FACE) grant from Petro Canada this past September.
He won the lightweight single gold and the heavyweight bronze at the 2016 Canadian University Rowing Championships.
